The Darby Mills Project Bio
'In 1978 Darby Mills embarked on a now 40-year journey of extraordinary proportions becoming one of Canada’s iconic female rock vocalists and the voice of all 3 “Headpins” releases and the 3 greatest hits to follow!
The Headpins, released their debut album Turn It Loud in 1982, which in record time went double platinum selling over 500,000 records and topped the charts for six weeks, with the hit singles "Don't It Make Ya Feel [Dancin], “People” and “Turn It Loud.” That year the Headpins were nominated for most promising new act at the JUNO’S and in 1983 the band won the Shure Music Express Awards for Top New Group and Darby Mills as Top Female Vocalist. Their second release, Line of Fire, was another platinum-plus success with 150,000 in sales and included the hits "Just One More Time" and "Feel It (Feel My Body)." In 1984 they released their 3rd and final recording Head Over Heels which included the singles “Staying all Night” and “Be With You.” again topping 150,000 units. The band toured with the likes of ZZ TOP, Whitesnake, KISS, Vince Neill, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Quiet Riot, and many others.
After those wild and crazy paced 5 years, Mills was fired from her position as singer and the original Headpin line up folded (early 1986) Retaining the Headpins record contract with MCA USA, Mills went on to pursue a solo career. Heading to London England where she recorded 6 tracks at the famous Eel Pie Recording Studio owned by Pete Townshend of the WHO. Along with Producer Greg Walsh of Tina Turner “Private Dancer” fame at the controls. Unfortunately while in England, MCA underwent huge personnel changes. At that point, Mills returned home to find she no longer had representation within the label and was released from her contractual obligations! The new A&R department signed a then 16 year old "Tiffany" instead.
Sticking to her guns In 1991 Mills inked a solo deal with Warner Music and released "Never Look Back" which Included the singles “Cry to me” and “Hot Water” For her efforts she was honored with a Juno nomination and soon after nominated for a star on the Canadian WALK OF FAME. Having sold only 35k of her new "Never Look Back" CD Mills was once again released from her contract and in 1992 decided to retire on a farm in the Valley............
In 1993 Mills returning to her place as the VOICE of the Headpins and a new line up of players.
2016, 36 years after joining The Headpins and some life altering changes, Mills felt it was now or never. Taking a leap of faith she is set on the path to find herself and rekindle her passion. In Aug 2016 Darby performed her last show with the Headpins and The Darby Mills Project was born. With the re-mastered release of "Never Look Back" now called "FLYING SOLO" the perfect moniker to her new endeavors.
Darby has had the opportunity to take part in many extraordinary things during her career. Dining with the royal Prince Charles and Lady Dianna at a dinner for young achievers of Canada in 1986/87. She sang at the SOLD OUT performance at BC Place for the celebration of Rick Hanson's " MAN IN MOTION" tour. Preformed at the opening ceremonies of Vancouver’s EXPO 86. She was one of the voices picked to sing on the newest renditions of “Oh Canada”sponsored by the Canadian government. Then preformed for Queen Elizabeth amongst Canada's finest for the 150 birthday celebration in Ottawa. Sang along side then Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney at 24 Sussex Dr. She was the VOICE of the Calgary Stampede for 5 if not more years. And has just recently in 2018 been presented with the honorary White Cowboy Hat from the Calgary Stampede comity. She sang on jingles for Sun Ripe Juice, Britannia Jeans, the Dallas Morning News USA, Arco Gas company, one or 2 B movies sound tracks that will remain nameless and in 2017 filmed a documentary “ QUEEN OF SCREAM” for Telus TV on Demand, regarding her life and journey as a woman in the music industry. And most recently was asked to join GENE Simmons to do a duet at the Canadian Summer Rock festival "Cannafest" in Grand forks BC Canada where Mills has the pleasure of preforming for the past 5 consecutive years.
